Helping Haiti

It's overwhelming. The devastation in Haiti is almost incomprehensible to those of us whose closest connection to the country comes through the stories we see via television and Internet media. But it is as real as anything else we've seen with our own eyes today ... and heard with our own ears ... and ...

While we've seen some of the sights and heard some of the sounds (albeit secondhand), I can't help but think of the real, unedited images and sounds--the moaning, the wailing, the weeping--and the smell. The smell of destruction. Of death.

My heart goes out to those affected by this horrible event. It is unimaginable what they are going through right now, as I sit in my warm, comfortable living room with the aroma of dinner coming from the kitchen.

Many organizations are already on the ground in Haiti, assessing the situation and getting to work. If you want to help, I highly recommend supporting Samaritan's Purse. This ministry is in the business of disaster relief. This is what SP does--and does with excellence and integrity, all the while seeking God's direction.

As a former employee, both at the international headquarters and in a field office, I can personally vouch that this ministry is grateful for and highly values every donation--from the widow's mite on up. When you give to Samaritan's Purse, you can rest assured that your money is going where you intend for it to go. As an employee who had to get purchase orders signed--sometimes by a vice president and a few times even by Franklin Graham himself---I will be honest and say that at times that integrity could be pretty inconvenient, especially when facing a deadline. But that integrity is of utmost importance, and I highly respect this ministry.

I don't work there anymore, but I fully support Samaritan's Purse. I know there are a lot of great ministries and charities who are doing wonderful work--in Haiti and around the world. I am not taking anything away from them. This is just my personal account and where our donation will be going--with confidence, thankfulness and prayers.

And whether or not you can give financially at this time, please pray for Haiti.

  2. My father was in NYC yesterday and he said a radio DJ actually played Carole King's "I Feel The Earth Move" and commented on Haiti. So tacky. Thank you for sharing info on helping out. This has been weighing heavily on my heart. Yet another reason to not complain and enjoy the simple pleasures in life.
