If you wait for me, then I'll come for you.
Although I've traveled far, I always hold a place for you in my heart.
I was going for a drive today, and at the last minute grabbed some random CDs. As I listened, one of the songs took me back several years. It was Tracy Chapman's "The Promise"--I posted a YouTube link in the post below. Such a beautiful song. I hadn't heard it in years but was surprised at how quickly I remembered the lyrics.
The song today had a different meaning for me than it did when I last listened to it. It used to be a song about long-distance romance--at least to me it did. But today as I heard it with fresh ears, I couldn't help but think of the relationship between birth mother and adoptee. Tears filled my eyes as the song played and I drove, thinking of the mothers and their grown children who long to reconnect one day.
If you think of me, if you miss me once in a while, then I'll return to you.
I'll return and fill that space in your heart.
I encourage you to listen to the song yourself, as I am only sharing a sampling of the moving lyrics. Combined with Tracy Chapman's voice, they are even more compelling.
Together again, it would feel so good to be in your arms, where all my journeys end.
If you can make a promise--if it's one that you can keep--I vow to come for you if you wait for me.
And say you'll hold a place for me in your heart ...
oh my gosh - I was just thinking about 'adoption related songs' RIGHT NOW! I was actually thinking of Michael Buble's 'I Just Haven't Met You Yet', but I just looked at all the lyrics and it actually doesn't work. LOL
ReplyDeleteBut your song is SO great! And fitting, and well, it made my eyes water a little :)
Thanks for sharing!
Karen, this very song is my favorite and has very deep meaning for me...in fact, my journal blog is titled "The Promise" and the first post is the lyrics to this song. I couldn't believe you posted about this same song! So beautiful and so meaningful! Love it!
