Isaac had his first stateside pediatrician's visit on Monday (August 2, 2010). Everyone at the doctor's office thought he was just adorable (which ... of course ... he IS). :o) I took in his file as well as copies of his medical records from Korea. His physical exam and general checkup looked fantastic--we are so thankful. Here are his stats:
Weight: 18 pounds, 15 ounces (10th percentile)
Height: 30.5 inches (90th percentile)
Head Circumference: 18 inches (20th percentile)
Dr. G and I discussed several things, including bonding and attachment, eating and sleeping habits, vaccination history, language, etc. Dr. G said we should expect Isaac to have a speech delay because he is now being exposed to a completely new language. I had thought the same thing, and it's nice to expect it ahead of time (and also to know what to be looking for, since Kate had such a significant speech delay). Who knows? Maybe we will be pleasantly surprised. But I am thankful to know the resources that are available for children with delays.
We also talked about transitioning to U.S. formula. I had wondered if we should just transition to milk from the Korean formula--especially because we are so close to Isaac's first birthday and because some babies have trouble switching formulas. And I didn't want to change formulas and then turn around and switch to milk, etc. But because Isaac's weight is so low, Dr. G wants to keep him on formula through his birthday, which is next month. And that is fine--we want to do what is best for Isaac and help him get as much nutrition as possible. In fact, we are starting the transition to Kirkland (Costco brand) formula tomorrow by adding a little of the new formula to the old, etc. We hope the transition goes well. Kate took Kirkland formula and really thrived on it.
Isaac received two shots: Prevnar and Hib. He did not enjoy them at all--and I almost started crying right along with him. But he calmed down pretty quickly and fell asleep on the drive home--what a champ! Before we left, we made the appointment for his one-year checkup.
Next week, he is having some labs drawn. I went back to the doctor's office yesterday to pick up some paperwork for the labs. From what I understand, the tests are pretty standard for children who are adopted internationally. We just want to make sure all is well with our little guy.
Halmoni came over and took Kate to lunch while we went to the doctor's office. Kate said she wanted to see Dr. G, too. LOL!
First visit to the pediatrician's office ... stateside, that is!
With Dr. G--we love our pediatrician!
With Nurse Y. She is great!
Glad that the lil guy is doing well and healthy!
ReplyDeleteI love the look Isaac is giving Dr. G in the first picture.
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to tell you Bates is a shrimp too... 20 lbs at 19 mths. He is still on a formula bottle at night before bed. Our ped said keep him on the formula as long as we want (for night bottle) for higher calories and I love the bottle for attachment!
ReplyDeletecute, cute, cute! I love that your daughter wanted to go too! Such a great feeling to know our kids love their doctor!
