OK, so we attempted another family night the other night--this one was in conjunction with our visit to the Phipps Plaza Santa. (At Kate's young age, it is helpful for me to plan family night with an outside activity.) I made the appointment in the evening so we could go as a family.
So ... first, we went to see Santa, of course!
When we got home, we got Kate ready for bed--all dressed in some red-and-white Christmas PJs, kind of like what Santa might wear. She and Tanna put on some Santa hats, and we pulled out a Santa tree-topper from when I had a Santa-themed tree one year. I have more Santa hats, but I didn't feel like looking through more Christmas decorations at the time. I guess that's not the Santa spirit, huh? Oh well.
Story time was up next. I was going to have Tanna read "A Visit from St. Nicholas," but he complained ... I mean ... pointed out ... that it wasn't the night before Christmas yet. (He read it to Kate last Christmas Eve, and I suppose he will do so again this year.) That's OK--I had another book ready in the wings. It's called Jolly Old Santa Claus, and I love it. My Aunt Edith got this book for my sister when we were little, and I remember spending what seemed like hours upon hours just studying all of the photos. A few years back, I happened to find the paperback version in a random store and bought some copies for us and for gifts. Love this book! Kate wasn't too into the story or the photos, but she sure wanted to rip the book apart. LOL!
Kate soon went to sleep, dreaming about sugar plums and such. (Yeah, right!) After Tanna and I ate dinner, I made one of Santa's favorite snacks: cookies! Chocolate chip, of course! And I served them on our new Santa plate. Yum! They are all gone now, of course. Oh, and I had a Santa Coke, too.
It was a good family night--even though Tanna gave me a hard time for possibly scratching up one of our pots with the mixer. (They are not even nice pots, people!) He reminded me that I could not stay mad at him because, after all, it was family night and I didn't want to ruin Santa night, right? LOL! How can I argue with that?
I thought of more stuff we could have done, but simple is fine. I love how family nights can be so simple--and you can just work with stuff you already have around the house. Check out Whittaker Woman's blog for more family nights.
