The Big Chicken in Marietta is legendary. Tales of The Big Chicken preceded my move to Georgia, though I still wasn't sure about exactly what I was hearing. "What is this Big Chicken?" I thought to myself. I think people tried to explain that it literally is a big chicken that is part of a KFC restaurant, but I just didn't understand. What I did know, however, is that it is a very important driving landmark. Directions in the area are likely to begin with, "Do you know where The Big Chicken is?" (Or at least some reference to the bird will be in there.)
And yes, in my KP Style Book, The Big Chicken is capitalized. I am not sure if AP has an entry. Yet.
I think I found The Big Chicken for the first time quite by accident--and I was excited to unexpectedly see such a thing of epic proportions. It was back in 2005 or 2006, if I remember correctly. I was out driving around, headed to a store in that neck of the woods. And there it was. I've only seen it a handful of times since. I don't make it over to Marietta very often, so my Big Chicken sightings are few and far between.
Last year, my friend Kristi was visiting from Tennessee, and we wanted to take the girls (Kate and Amelia, her DD) to The Big Chicken for a photo. We had cute chicken clothing for the girls to wear and everything. But things didn't go quite like we'd planned. Here's why ...
When we got there, The Big Chicken was all gray--and there was construction-type equipment around that part of the restaurant! I guess he (she?) was getting a makeover or something. I was so disappointed!
Also, when we arrived, the girls were sound asleep.
Kate soon woke up. (Did I wake her? I can't remember.) So I put on her special chicken shirt (a hand-me-down from R&R), and tried to get a few pictures. Unfortunately, I had the camera on a weird setting by accident, so the pics are not that great, and you can't tell there is a cute chicken on her shirt.
See? Bok! Bok!
Inside the restaurant, you can see lots of neat memorabilia on display. I wish I could recommend eating there, but I got something to go and didn't have the best experience. Perhaps I caught them on a bad day. The displays are neat to see, though.
You also may see some neat artwork and/or cards from area children.
Maybe one of these days when Kristi visits again, we will make it back to The Big Chicken and finally get a good picture. We can only hope!
P.S. Don't tell Chick-fil-A!
Ha Ha! Our lips are sealed Karen! :D

ReplyDeleteBok! Bok! So fun! I remember I had never heard of the Big Chicken until this adventure. Look how much Kate and Amelia have grown! Georgians must really like their livestock- pink pigs, big chickens. :)
