Our book club met last week to discuss What Was Lost: A Novel by Catherine O'Flynn. I liked this book--and I am not a big fiction person. I found myself relating to the little girl's imagination as well as to the mall gal's mall experiences. (The whole story is kind of centered around a mall--but part of it takes place in the 1980s, and the other part ... just a few years ago.) I used to work at a mall back in the day, so I totally *got* a lot of the mall stuff.
One funny thing: The story is set in England. I did not pick up on this, despite the British vernacular the author uses (and despite the fact that she is British herself). Duh! The Birmingham in the story was in Alabama in my mind. So when I finally realized that this was not happening in the South ... but in another country altogether ... I had to rethink what I'd already read. What a goof!
