Kate's First Day of Preschool

Kate is all ready to go!

Yesterday was Kate's first day of preschool! We were so thankful to find a great preschool that offers a mother's morning out program for children Kate's age--and it had space for Kate. Plus, it's not too far from where we live! YAY! That all of this worked out is an answer to prayer because the wait lists for some of these places is just crazy--and to find a spot in the middle of the semester is no small feat! Thank You, Lord!

We wanted Kate to get started in a structured program as soon as possible because she was recently diagnosed with a speech delay. She started attending speech therapy back in January, and her language is improving by leaps and bounds already! Anyway, her therapist and her pediatrician said it would be beneficial for her to be in a good preschool program, both for language development and socialization.

So yesterday ... We both did pretty well--though I did miss her a lot and wonder how she was doing. She got a good report. She was teary, of course, which is to be expected. When I was about to leave her in her classroom, I was getting a little teary myself--but I got out of there because I didn't want to cry in front of everyone. I ran some errands and picked her up a few hours later. We were both thrilled to see each other. She'll be going twice a week. What a big girl--she is growing up so fast!

Her "first day" outfit, sippy cup, snack and backpack (a gift from Janna--thank you!)

@ the door and about to go in

Walking to her class ...

Art project from her first day--isn't it fabulous?

  5. Yay Kate!!! I know I think my Kate learns SO much from "school" and from the other kids. It will probably be nice for you too, to have a little break. I expect lots of blogging! ;)

  6. It sounds like you did a great job keeping it together at drop-off! I cried the entire three hours Tyler was at preschool for the first time!

  8. Oh, how fast they grow up! It will be good for both of you, even though it is very hard right now. Also tell Kate that if you guys are ever in SC she can come play in my big back yard! Braxton would love to have another friend to play with!

  10. I too wonder if my little girl has a speech delay. My husband and I wonder if it is because we are raising her to be bilingual (English from me and Cantonese from hubby). Did they suggest this for your Kate? Sorry to be so nosy, it's just something I worry about all the time since my 18 month old isn't talking as much as her peers. And preschool, wow! I would have been crying my eyes out. Good for you for being so brave. And I love Kates ensemble for the first day of school :)

  11. This makes my heart hurt a little.
I'm putting my little one in preschool next year and although I know he will have a great time and learn so much, I'm gonna miss his terribly!

  13. Hi, Anonymous,
Yes, we were asked if we were a bilingual home--which we aren't, really. DH speaks Korean/English to his parents, and Kate hears Korean when she is around her grandparents. But it was not enough for it to be a factor for her speech delay. I will try to write more about her speech delay and the progress that she has made next week. Have you discussed your concerns with your pedi? Kate was diagnosed officially at her 18-month well-check. At that time, she had no words. Hang in there; I'll try to write more about our experience next week. Have a nice weekend!

  15. Hi, Anon here! I hit anon and publish w/o adding my usuual name, Chloe's Mommy. Our ped today at her 18 month checkup gave us two more months for her to develop a 10 to 15 word vocabulary. Chloe isn't completely silent, but sometimes calls strangers Dada, which isn't my idea of consistency, lol. I appreciate your answer. It's hard when all of our friend's kids are advanced in speaking and we feel left behind. I look forward to hearing what you post as we are probably headed down the same road as you. I too thought of preschool or more playgroups but hubby is worried about exposing her to too much germs ever since she had a super virus a few weeks back and ended up in the hospital with severe dehydration and a febrile seizure. Hey, who said parenting wasn't exciting? It's sure keeping us on our toes :)

  16. Hi Karen, Love your blog--Kate is soooooo cute! I'd be interested in hearing more about her speech delay and how they came about diagnosing that at 18 months? Seems every doctor has a different opinion. My son just turned 20 months and is not saying too much. Great receptive language so at least he understands a lot, but not too many words. Many of our playdates with kids his age are similar in their speech skill, while a few have quite a vocab. Every child is so different! Anyway, I'll look forward to your post about this topic! Thanks for sharing.
