I've been shoe (box) shopping!

***National Collection Week is November 17-24***

I *heart* Macy's! Tonight I ran in there to ask if they had any extra shoe boxes because I need a few more to finish packing for Operation Christmas Child. Well, a guy working in the women's shoe department was sooooo nice. He promptly went to the back and brought out two bags' worth of shoe boxes. Good ones, too.

If you are in need of boxes for OCC, I recommend asking a shoe store or a place where shoes are sold. Many times, customers leave without their boxes--and the boxes get thrown away at the end of the day. In fact, the guy tonight told me that if I need more to just come back tomorrow.

Also, it helps to ask in advance so the sales folks can save up their extra boxes. A couple of years ago, I asked the men's shoe department at Macy's to save some of their boxes for me. I chose the men's department because their shoe boxes tend to be bigger. And I chose Macy's because they sell nice shoes, which usually means nicer boxes. (Side note: I have asked some of the snottier shoe stores in Lenox for extra boxes and received snotty responses. But Macy's people have always been soooooo nice.) Anyway, the men's department saved up some boxes for me and called when they were ready for me to come and pick them up. Holy cow--you should have seen what they had for me! We are talking two huge cartons of shoe boxes! Nice ones! Fortunately, Tanna had accompanied me to the mall, so he helped me carry everything and load up the car. THANK YOU, MACY'S!

P.S. Sometimes I get some boxes at Target, too. The quality isn't as good, but they work just fine.

P.P.S. You also can use plastic shoe box-sized containers, which can be re-used for many purposes by the recipient and his or her family.

P.P.P.S. If you find a really pretty shoe box, then you might not even have to wrap it. But for some folks, wrapping is part of the fun!

P.P.P.P.S. The processing center can use some of the extra shoe boxes to replace boxes that may have been damaged in transport. So if I happen to have some nice, sturdy boxes left over, sometimes I take them to the warehouse for that reason.

  4. I never thought about the fact that shoe departments would have empty shoeboxes laying around -- what a great idea! I'm taking the kids to the store tomorrow to get items for our shoeboxes -- we do it every year and the kids love it. :)
