Babies Can't Eat Kimchee ... or Bee-bim Bop!
When Kate was a newborn, I went on an Amazon shopping spree for Korean-themed children's books. I thought it would be another way to incorporate her Korean heritage into her everyday life. One of the books that I bought--Babies Can't Eat Kimchee!--is pictured above. Best I can remember, it is a very cute book (I haven't read it in a while), but my absolute favorite that I ordered at the time is this one:
Oh my goodness, this book--Bee-bim Bop!--is so cute! I just LOVE it! The illustrations are just adorable. The little story is of a Korean kid helping her mother make bee-bim bop, a Korean dish consisting of rice and a variety of vegetables and sometimes beef and egg. It is typically made with a spicy bean paste to give it more kick. I don't eat it myself--I know you are shocked!--but Tanna loves the stuff! I will agree that even if you don't eat it, it is fun to say!
Anyway, in the book, the author uses a catchy rhythm with her words and includes a bee-bim bop recipe in the back. I was surprised to see another recipe for "bibimap" (it's so interesting to see various English spellings of Korean words) in the latest edition of Cookie magazine. Pretty cool!
Finally, here is a photo of Tanna's mom eating bee-bim bop at a local Korean restaurant. At least I am pretty sure it is bee-bim bop. I asked Tanna, and he thought so, too--but he was squinting and looking at the photo on the monitor from a little ways away.

so cute. You r such a great Mom for making sure that Kate stays true to her Korean heritage. I'm horrible, I haven'been teaching William much of mine.
ReplyDeletehey, i wasn't squinting at the screen, i was just looking at it! you saying something about my slant eyes? you and miley cyrus, i tell ya.
ReplyDeletefyi, cookie misspelled bibimbap. they have bibimap above the recipe but on the right of the pic they have bibimbap. oh well, they tried.
I thought I was going to read about Kate hating Kimchee.
ReplyDeleteI try to buy a lot of Chinese books for Chloe for the same reason. However, most are about Chinese New Year! LOL. I'll have to check out those two books because my husband may be from Hong Kong but he loves Kimchi!
