Last Thursday, we loaded up the car and headed north to Dahlonega. We were hoping to strike it rich, but we settled for an afternoon of family fun. ;o) When Mike mentioned taking the kids panning for gold, I had no idea that included actually going beneath the earth's surface to tour a real mine.
We wore hard hats and everything!
The descent ...

Fire in the hole!
Yes, that is a real-live bat. Sorry, I wasn't about to get any closer for a better photo.
Some sort of underground critter. I also saw a small snake, but I didn't take any time to snap a pic.
Cousins
Once we resurfaced, it was time to do some panning. Eric found a nugget--the biggest one so far that day, we were told.
I found the process laborious and too time-consuming. All Kate wanted to do was splash in the water.
After our panning experience, we toured the Dahlonega Gold Museum and walked around a bit.
Some miners we saw
Can you see the Dahlonega gold in the photo? BTW, did you know that the dome of Georgia's Capitol is plated with gold from Dahlonega? It sure is!
Brothers!
Back at home ... Kylie and Eric stayed with us that night; we ordered pizza for dinner.
