Mom Tip--Baby's First Outfits

This preemie dress and bonnet I picked up at a consignment sale.
So tiny and so cute--just like baby!

Before Kate was born, my friend Jennifer gave me some great advice. She's a wonderful mom of two, and I value what she has to say--so I was sure to take her advice to heart. One thing she told me: Buy some preemie clothes for the baby.

I'll say it again: Buy some preemie clothes for the baby.

At 7 pounds, 2 ounces, Kate was bigger than expected--but she still wore preemie-sized clothing for at least a couple of weeks. Maybe longer--I am having a hard time remembering.

Kate's preemie-sized coming-home outfit. This wasn't my first choice, but it was one that fit at the time. I did think it was very cute, though.

Also, I'd be sure to have at least one preemie option for baby's coming-home outfit. In our hospital bag, I had packed a few outfit options for Kate's special attire (coming-home and hospital-photo ensembles). Even some of the preemie clothes were too big, so I was glad to have a few things from which to choose.

This preemie outfit I bought at Wal-Mart--it has a matching bib.

I know what you are thinking. I thought the same thing at first. But I sure was glad to have the preemie clothes I had. I got a few as gifts and had purchased a few as well. When Kate finally grew out of them, I passed some of them on to my friend Kristi, whose daughter wore them, too.

If you end up not needing them, then great--you can always share with another mom or even take them back if you don't use them.

  1. Wow, I guess my little girl at 8lbs 1 oz was a little bigger than most. I would suggest sticking with 0-3 months size, unless you know your baby is predicted to be small. That size only lasted 1 month for us. Now with crawling and standing her weight percentile has dropped to 25% in weight (but 50% for height) at 11 months and she is in the 12 month size.

  2. Of course--you'll want 0-3 outfits, too. But I never even thought of having any preemie clothes on hand until my friend suggested it--and I was very glad to have followed her advice. :o) We used our preemie clothes a lot (and Kate wasn't even preemie-sized). Like I said, you can always pass them on or take them back if you don't end up using them. :o) They do grow fast!

  3. I totally agree with you, Karen! Great advice...

My Kate was 6lb 8oz and wore preemie clothes for almost a month! My mom had to run out and get some clothes for her to wear because the stuff we had didn't fit!

  4. Great mom tip, as usual! I also used preemie clothes for our "coming home outfit" for both girls and had a few on hand for the weeks following. Our girls were 7lbs9oz and 7lbs15oz-they swam in 0-3 sized clothing for a little while. It wasn't long before they were filling them out though! :)

  5. I wish you had posted this great tip before June 20th (Kennedy's arrival date). I had packed several 0-3 months outfits to choose from for Kennedy to wear home from the hospital, but she only weighed 6 lbs. 4oz. and dropped to 5lb.15oz. the day we left so her 0-3 months clothes were huge on her. My mom had to go to Baby Depot and buy her some preemie clothes. Luckily, she found an adorable outfit for Kennedy to wear home. She is now almost 5 weeks and is still wearing preemie clothes. Unfortunately, we have a closet full of clothes that are still too big and she may not get a chance to wear. Oh well. BTW- thanks for the snowman sweater and always thinking of Kennedy!
