Kate was on The Early Show! Meteorologist Dave Price asked her a few questions (her name, where she was from, etc.) while he was interviewing the crowd outside. Then, when he came back on the air, he actually handed us his mic* and took her lollipop and used it as his microphone. LOL! It was cute, but Kate wasn't too happy about it. She started crying as he was wrapping up his weather segment. Sorry about that, Dave! :o)
I didn't get any pictures of it, but I did somehow manage to snap a quick pic right before we went back on the air:
Dave Price was looking at Kate here, getting ready to talk to her (or maybe that was when he decided to swap his microphone for her sucker--hahaha).
I looked and looked online for a clip of the show, but to no avail. Finally, after several e-mails and phone calls to various people in Atlanta and New York, we were put in touch with someone who could help us get a copy of the show. We had to pay for it (about $60 or so, I think), but we finally got it last month. It was a lot of fun to watch. I wish I could post it, but we were informed--more than once, mind you--that we did not have any rights to reproduce or to post the footage anywhere.
But back to NYC ...
Our visit to The Early Show all kind of fell into place at the last minute. I had seen something online where you could request a free behind-the-scenes tour. And so I e-mailed, inquiring about it. This was when we already were in NYC, so I was late in looking into it. On our last full day there, I got a voice mail from a guy at The Early Show. He said we were all set and could do the tour the next morning. We were leaving the next day--but not until the afternoon--so we decided to go for it.
We were told to be there before 7 a.m. So I got up at 5-something to start getting ready, etc. The three of us made it out the door and walked up to the plaza just in time ... to wait. LOL!
Everything was set up outside when we got there, but no one else was there, fan-wise. A very nice lady from The Early Show talked to us and said we had plenty of time to go get something to eat and come back. And so we did--Tanna had been looking for some coffee anyway.
Mr. X on the set.
When we came back, a small crowd had already gathered. (That was fast!) The crowd continued to grow as the morning progressed.
It was a little chillier than anticipated, so we put Kate's Big Apple sweater on her.
There's Dave Price getting ready for his forecast.
Kate with one of her many suckers--I think this is the infamous one.
Oh, yeah. So early on, while we were waiting, I heard some chatter that Tom Selleck was going to be on the show that day. Then we saw him arrive. There were two young girls next to us (one of them was celebrating her 18th birthday). They were like, "Who's Tom Selleck?" Can you believe that? LOL!
Look! It's Magnum ... I mean Richard ... I mean Tom Selleck!
Bobby Flay was there, too. It was Cinco de Mayo, and he demonstrated some holiday recipes for viewers. Pretty neat!
Here comes Harry! I actually met Harry Smith when I was in college. He came to ETSU to speak and to work with students in the journalism program, if I remember correctly. This would have been back in 1993 or so, so it's hard to recall. LOL! I do remember asking him a question during a Q&A session. He was very nice.
After the show, Kate met Maggie Rodriguez, who was so sweet--not to mention beautiful. She said Kate was the star of the show. Sooooo nice! Maggie was pregnant in this photo, but I read online that she had her baby--a boy, Michael--on June 13.
When the show was over, everyone who was doing the studio tour met and went inside as a group. After a brief talk about the set, we were welcome to take photos and ask questions. It was very nice!
Thank you to The Early Show! Our visit was definitely a big highlight of our NYC trip!
*Completely off-topic, but I wasn't sure on the spelling of "mic"--whether it should be "mic" or "mike" as an abbreviated form of "microphone." Anyway, I found this post regarding AP Style's recent change--and change back: http://www.bloodywellwrite.com/2010/04/26/i-cant-hear-you-mic-vs-mike/
Glad I'm not the only one who wasn't sure--hahaha!
So cool! I watch the Early show almost every morning, but I must have missed it that day. I love Dave Price, he is sooo funny.
