Five Islands Lobster Co.

Hanging in our home is a small framed print of a special place. Perhaps you've seen that picture in our living room before. It's not too big, so you may not have noticed it or given it a second look. Tanna says he'll be looking closer at that picture when we return home. It's an old print of Five Islands Lobster Co.--and it used to hang in my parents' house. Let me tell you about this place.

No visit to the Five Islands area is complete without a stop at the Five Islands Lobster Co. Here you can eat some of Maine's finest lobster and all the fixin's. (Have those two words ever been used together? LOL!) Also available on the premises are lots American fare menu items--not to mention some tasty ice cream. Perhaps the best thing about this casual eatery is the atmosphere and view. You dine right out on the dock and enjoy the boats and birds along with your meal.

I love to sit out there and imagine what the place must have been like when my grandparents lived in Five Islands--just a hop, skip and a jump from the lobster company. This is the scene they saw practically every day. These are the waters they knew and loved.

I've been here a handful of times over the years and enjoy it more and more with each visit. And I'm not even a big seafood person! I knew Tanna would love it, so when I was planning our time in Maine, I was sure to look up Five Islands Lobster Co. I found out the place would be closing for the season on Columbus Day--so we made it just in time! Literally, we had just a few hours before the place would be locked up (at least to customers) till next year. I am so glad we got to experience Five Islands Lobster Co. as a family while we were here!

Be sure to check out the Web site for more info, but here's a quick snippet: "The wharf at Five Islands is a working wharf used by our local lobstermen. While you’re here you can watch them baiting their traps, selling their wares, or if you happen to be here in the evening, watch as a huge tuna is brought in." Oh, and I love the directions listed: "We are located approximately 14 miles from dowtown Bath. From Route 1 in either direction, take 127 South until it ends. As one local puts it, 'keep going until your hat floats, and then just back up a bit.'" LOL!

  3. Looks Wonderfull, glad you made it in time and got to eat fresh lobster. What's missing is the general store and Postoffice we came to ever day. During the summer, this place is the hub of activity. Bly
