Earlier this week, Kate and I drove up to Suwanee to visit the Operation Christmas Child warehouse. Well, I did the driving--she was the navigator. Monday was Family Day at the processing center, and we wanted to check it out. Each year since she has been around, I've taken Kate to the warehouse--the location of which changes, by the way, because it is rented or donated space.
OCC started these Family Day events a few years ago. It's a day for families with young children to tour the warehouse and learn how the shoe boxes are processed and delivered. There also are fun activities, crafts, goodies and such. It's really designed for children a little older than Kate, but we still wanted to drop by. While she was too young for a lot of the more formal things, she did enjoy coloring a picture and seeing all of the shoe boxes--not to mention pictures of her old pals, Bob and Larry from VeggieTales.
Getting ready to leave. We didn't want to go empty-handed, so we took two shoe boxes, one from each of us.
A big banner greets folks as they enter the warehouse.
Kate with some of the shoe boxes bought in by Family Day participants.
Kate loved this red balloon. Sadly, it floated up, up, and away a few minutes after this photo.
Jessica and Lisa. Jessica and I have talked on the phone and via e-mail, etc., but this was our first time meeting in person. Lisa is the Atlanta-area volunteer leader--she has a great passion for the ministry and does an outstanding job!
Processing Center shot. My eyes look kind of crazy because I was trying not to close them in the picture. (They were shut in the photo right before this one.)
Chad, Lance, Ken, Kate and me. We were there right before shift change, so we got to see several old friends and colleagues. Yay! I used to work with these guys. Lance (second from left) is the OCC guy for Tennessee, and I was a volunteer for him back about 10 years ago. Wow, time flies!
Jamie--Southeast Region OCC extraordinaire. He was on the phone and couldn't be in the picture, so here he is. :o)
Your gift goes a long way!
This looks like a lot of fun. I think the closest one to us is in Calif.
ReplyDeleteAww! That is a GREAT event!
ReplyDeleteHow neat-I think it is great that Kate is getting to experience OCC firsthand at such a young age.
